Big Boss

The Legend Who Fell

The greatest soldier of the 20th century and the tragic figure at the centre of Peace Walker. Mentor, legend, and the man whose slow fall from grace drives half the saga.

A legend isn't born. It's made.

Solid Snake is the hero. Big Boss is the tragedy. In Master Collection Vol.2, he leads Peace Walker — the game where the world’s greatest soldier starts building the army that will one day make him a villain.

Who he is

Born John, codenamed Naked Snake, he earned the title “Big Boss” after the events of Operation Snake Eater in 1964, when he was forced to kill his own mentor, The Boss, on the orders of his government. That betrayal — being made to murder the person he loved and admired most, then being decorated for it — is the wound that never heals. Everything Big Boss does afterward is, in some sense, a reaction to it.

Big Boss in Peace Walker

By 1974 he’s gone independent. Alongside Kazuhira Miller he founds Militaires Sans Frontières — Soldiers Without Borders — a private army loyal to no government. Peace Walker is the story of MSF’s early days in Costa Rica, and it’s where Big Boss’s philosophy crystallises: soldiers deserve a place of their own, a cause they choose, free from the politics that chewed up The Boss.

It’s also where you, the player, literally build that dream. Every soldier you recruit, every upgrade to Mother Base, is Big Boss assembling the foundation of what becomes Outer Heaven. Peace Walker makes his fall feel earned rather than sudden — you watch the ideals curdle in real time.

The father of Snake

Here’s the twist that ties the whole saga together: Big Boss is the genetic template for Solid, Liquid and Solidus Snake. The hero of MGS4 is, in a very real sense, the son of the man you play in Peace Walker. Understanding Big Boss makes Solid Snake’s story land far harder — they’re two halves of the same legend pulling in opposite directions.
