The Codec
Radio & Intel
Snake's radio lifeline. The Codec is how you get briefings, hints, lore and the series' famous long conversations — and it's as much a storytelling device as a gameplay one.
This is Snake. Do you read me?
That green call screen with two portraits and a stream of text is one of gaming’s most recognisable interfaces. The Codec is Snake’s radio, his lifeline, and the device through which Metal Gear tells an enormous amount of its story.
What the Codec is
Mechanically, the Codec lets you contact your support team during a mission. Dial the right frequency and you reach the people guiding you — for Solid Snake, that’s largely Otacon and the rest of his crew; for Big Boss in Peace Walker, it’s Kazuhira Miller and his specialists. Through it you can:
- Get mission briefings and objectives.
- Receive hints when you’re stuck — support characters often nudge you toward the solution.
- Learn about weapons, enemies and lore from specialists.
- Save your game (in the classic-style flow).
- Hear characters react to the situation, which is where the magic happens.
More than a menu
What makes the Codec special is that it’s a storytelling engine. Some of the most beloved moments in the entire saga are Codec calls — quiet character beats, philosophical tangents, fourth-wall-breaking jokes, and emotional gut-punches delivered between two portraits and a wall of text. Kojima used the Codec to give the games room to breathe and to digress, and fans love it precisely because it’s unhurried.
It’s also a comedy and trivia goldmine. Call certain characters at odd moments and they’ll comment on what you’re doing, gripe about being interrupted, or share a wildly tangential anecdote. Part of the fun of a Metal Gear playthrough is checking in with your team just to hear what they’ll say.
Using it well
- Call support when stuck. Before you brute-force a tricky section, dial in — a hint is often waiting.
- Talk to people just to talk. Optional Codec calls are where a lot of the personality and lore lives. New players miss huge amounts of flavour by skipping them.
- Listen during boss fights. Your team frequently feeds you the strategy for a tough boss over the Codec mid-battle.
The Codec is also why this wiki’s design leans into that phosphor-green readout aesthetic — it’s pure Metal Gear. For the wider intel picture, see how it pairs with OctoCamo and recon to keep you one step ahead.
