Platforms & Editions: Which Version of Vol.2 to Buy
Every platform Master Collection Vol.2 is coming to — PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, Switch and PC — plus what to consider when choosing, and notes on digital vs physical editions.
Vol.2 is launching on a genuinely wide spread of hardware — five platforms, all on August 27, 2026. That’s great for accessibility but it does raise a question: which version should you buy? Here’s a practical rundown.
Every confirmed platform
- PlayStation 5
- Xbox Series X|S
- Nintendo Switch 2
- Nintendo Switch
- PC (Steam)
The historic part: MGS4 has never been on Xbox, PC or Nintendo hardware before. For nearly two decades it was a PS3 exclusive. So for most of these platforms, this is the first time Guns of the Patriots has ever been playable on them at all.
Choosing your platform
Since the games are the same across versions, your choice mostly comes down to hardware preferences and how you like to play.
PlayStation 5
The “home turf” choice — these are PlayStation games returning to PlayStation, and the PS5 is a safe bet for strong performance. If you’ve got a PS5 and no strong reason to pick another platform, this is the natural default.
Xbox Series X|S
A landmark version simply because MGS4 on an Xbox was unthinkable for years. Expect solid performance on Series X. If you’re an Xbox-first player, you finally get to join in on the Snake saga’s finale.
PC (Steam)
The pick for flexibility — higher resolutions, frame-rate options, and whatever your rig can push, plus the usual PC conveniences. As always with PC, the experience depends on your hardware and the quality of the port. Keep an eye on system requirements and early impressions before buying if you’re on a modest machine.
Nintendo Switch 2
The most interesting Nintendo option. The Switch 2’s extra horsepower should handle these games more comfortably than the original Switch, making it the better choice if you want MGS on the go without compromise. If you’ve upgraded, this is likely your best handheld pick.
Nintendo Switch (original)
Bringing games like MGS4 to the original Switch is ambitious, and it’s wonderful for accessibility — but on older, less powerful hardware, expect the most conservative performance of the bunch. If you own both Nintendo consoles, favour the Switch 2 version. If the original Switch is all you have, watch for performance impressions around launch.
Konami hasn’t yet published a full, official performance comparison (resolutions and frame rates per platform) at the time of writing. We’ll update this guide with concrete numbers as they’re confirmed.
Digital vs physical
Both digital and physical editions are expected, and the choice is the usual trade-off:
- Digital: Convenient, pre-loadable, no disc-swapping, and tied to your account. The digital edition is also where the digital soundtrack is bundled in.
- Physical: Great for collectors and resale, and a tangible piece of a landmark release. Just note that on some platforms a physical “release” of a multi-game collection may still require a download for part of the content — check the box details, especially on Nintendo cartridges.
Exact edition contents (standard, any deluxe versions, pre-order bonuses) can vary by region and retailer. For the latest, see our pre-orders and editions post, which we keep current.
Our quick recommendation
- Best all-round console experience: PS5 or Xbox Series X.
- Most flexible / best-looking (with the right hardware): PC.
- Best handheld: Switch 2.
- Budget handheld, with caveats: original Switch — fine, but expect the most modest performance.
Whichever you choose, the important thing is that you have a choice — something MGS4 fans couldn’t say for eighteen years. Pick the platform you’ll actually play on, and we’ll see you at launch on August 27, 2026. New to the series? Don’t miss our where to start guide before you dive in.
