If MGS4 is the saga’s ending, Peace Walker is one of its most important middles. Originally a PSP game from 2010 and later remastered for the HD Collection, it’s the title where Big Boss stops being a lone legend and starts becoming the leader of an army — and where a huge chunk of modern Metal Gear’s DNA was first written.

The story

It’s 1974. Naked Snake — now going by Big Boss — and his right hand Kazuhira Miller set up shop in Costa Rica with their fledgling private outfit, Militaires Sans Frontières (Soldiers Without Borders). A mysterious armed force has rolled into a country that constitutionally has no military, and what starts as a contract spirals into a confrontation with an autonomous nuclear deterrent and the ghost of Big Boss’s mentor.

Peace Walker is the game that takes Big Boss’s slow, tragic turn — first glimpsed at the end of Snake Eater — and gives it shape. It wrestles with deterrence, the bomb, loyalty and what a soldier owes to a cause rather than a flag. It’s also surprisingly funny, with comic strips, recruited prisoners and a famously breezy theme song.

Why it changed the series

This is the big one for systems. Mother Base debuts here: you Fulton-recover knocked-out enemy soldiers, balloon them off the battlefield, and assign them to combat, R&D, mess and medical teams. Manage your roster well and you unlock better weapons and gear. If you’ve played The Phantom Pain, every bit of this will feel familiar — because Peace Walker invented it.

The game was also designed for the road: missions are bite-sized, there are dedicated co-op modes, and boss fights against the AI-driven “AI weapons” are built to be tackled with friends. It’s a different rhythm from the long, cinematic mainline games, and that mission structure makes it one of the most replayable entries in the collection.

Where it sits in the timeline

Peace Walker takes place in 1974, after the events of Snake Eater and Portable Ops and before Big Boss’s eventual fall to Outer Heaven. It’s a crucial chapter in his arc and a direct lead-in to Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain. We lay out the full order in the Metal Gear timeline guide.
