Will Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 Suffer From Cut Content?
As Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 approaches, fans are debating potential cuts. Here is a breakdown of what content is staying or leaving.
With the highly anticipated release of MGS Master Collection Vol. 2 scheduled for August 27, 2026, fans are preparing to experience three historic titles on modern platforms. The bundle officially includes Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, and the Game Boy Color classic Metal Gear: Ghost Babel.
While bringing these titles to systems like the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Nintendo Switch 2 is a massive milestone for game preservation, it also raises a difficult question: will these ports be 100% complete, or will licensing hurdles and aged code result in missing content?
Under the Hood: MGS4’s Online Loss and Licensing Worries
The biggest talking point of the collection is undoubtedly the return of Old Snake. As MGS4 finally leaves PS3 for the first time since 2008, porting its intricate architecture has been a monumental task. Unfortunately, we already know one major feature is gone: Metal Gear Online 2 (MGO2).
MGO2 was integrated directly into the original PS3 release of Guns of the Patriots. Konami has confirmed that this multiplayer component will not return in the Vol. 2 bundle. While this is expected—the official servers were shut down back in 2012—it highlights the difficulties of preserving multiplayer-centric gaming history.
Beyond multiplayer, licensing is the biggest worry. The original version of MGS4 was packed with real-world product placements:
- The In-Game iPod: Snake could collect music tracks throughout the environment and listen to them on a fully branded iPod. Reportedly, the iPod feature itself remains, but it is not yet confirmed if all real-world songs have survived the relicensing process.
- Brand Placements: Real-world items like Regain energy drinks, Sony Ericsson mobile phones, and Triumph motorcycles were prominently featured.

Peace Walker: Multiplayer Confirmed, but Crossovers Are Uncertain
Unlike MGS4, the port of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (which is based on the HD Collection version) will retain its online multiplayer features. Konami has confirmed that both the Co-Ops mode (allowing 2 to 4 players to tackle missions together) and the competitive Versus Ops modes will be fully playable on modern networks.
This preservation is vital for newcomers looking to dive into the co-op loop, which we detail in our Peace Walker beginner guide.
However, Peace Walker originally featured some of the most bizarre crossovers in gaming history, most notably the Capcom collaboration that allowed players to fight Rathalos and Tigrex from the Monster Hunter series. While these missions were included in the PS3 HD Edition, it remains unconfirmed whether Konami has successfully renewed the licensing agreements with Capcom for the 2026 release. Other promotional items, such as AXE body spray and Doritos-branded gear, are expected to be stripped or replaced with generic assets.
Ghost Babel’s Connectivity Dilemma
Even the bonus GBC title, Metal Gear: Ghost Babel, faces preservation questions. The original Game Boy Color release featured a robust two-player VS Mode via the Link Cable, alongside special Stage Missions and the Japan-exclusive IdeaSpy 2.5 codec drama.
While Konami’s emulation wrappers in Vol. 1 vs. Vol. 2 handled basic gameplay well, it is not yet clear if local or online network play will be adapted to replace the physical link cable functionality. Additionally, fans are eager to see if the IdeaSpy 2.5 drama tracks will be fully translated and preserved in the digital Master Book.
The Preservation Compromise
As we get closer to the launch, details on preorders and editions indicate that Konami is aiming to deliver the most complete experience possible. However, the reality of modern game publishing means that some relicensing compromises are inevitable.
